Plot Review:
Santiago sets out to sea on his own one day in his small skiff. After waiting for hours and not catching anything, he finally feels a pull on his line. He struggles for hours to reel in the massive marlin once he realizes he has caught it. Santiago has a strong bond with the fish and admires its strength and determination as the battle goes on. Santiago knows he has won the battle when the fish begins to weaken despite his best efforts.
However, he fights to protect his catch as he begins to haul the marlin back to shore when he notices that sharks are getting closer to the fish. Notwithstanding his endeavours, the sharks destroy the marlin and Santiago gets back to shore crushed and depleted.
